The Homelessness Project/Justice Project
This project started in August of 2017. We studied sociology and studied philosophies such as Deontology, Utilitarianism, Libertarianism, and John Rawl’s. We decided to do things a little differently after these studies and get involved in our community. After many seminars and deliberation we chose homelessness as a subject to focus on.
Our exhibition consisted of three parts, keynote speakers, then student presentations, and the a dinner served. Keynote speakers had being from the council and groups from all around discussing their takes on the issue of homelessness and how they were trying to solve it. Student presentations had all of us showing our projects and discussing with anyone who was interested in our product for the project. Dinner was to get people from different backgrounds to talk to one another and open up. I was just so proud of it all, it was so professional and so many people came. I was so impressed by the sheer number of people that came and supported this cause.
I pushed myself to be independent in this project. For the last couple years I have been doing leadership work, especially last year in the Time and Space Project. I grew exponentially in confidence, maturity, and organization but, I wanted to see what I could create on my own with these new found skills that I have gained. I am proud of what I have done, and how efficiently I completed the task at hand. I worked after school and most of my lunches painting this mural.
I have become a more socially conscious and instead of looking away, and pretending that nothing wrong was going on, and it wasn't going to effect me-I opened my eyes. I have become more aware of who I am, what I believe in and how it effects the world I live in. With how crazy and convoluted our government is, this project has been particularly impactful through seeing the Charolette's Ville case and many others that bring to light, homophobia, racism, and sexism in our governmental laws. I also realize how hard it can be to hold justice in a rules system. All types of philosophies have pros and cons.
