Artist Statement
New Beginning
Saige M. Rasmussen
This piece of art is inspiration from a poem I wrote for my Humanities class. This poem is called Apologize. This art piece is based off of a few specific lines in my poem. One line is, “My eyes turn soft with tears of joy, For it is spring and a new beginning.” This is represented as flowers and their beautiful pink coloring. Matching that with her smile, which is based on this line, “My mouth with crack with a smirk and I will speak, ‘I will never apologize for being me, society never forced me to be this way.” The matching colors between the flowers and her mouth represents that she is new like the flowers behind her in spring. Now, the slight changing in colors with the flowers is simply a statement in diversity. I didn’t want the flowers to seemingly blend together but I didn’t want them to draw away from the girl. Going along with the idea of contrast, I made her a grey tone and her eyes bright blue which is a representation of these lines in my poem,“My eyes stare daggers into others,” and “My eyes turn soft with tears of joy.” These contrasting cold blue eyes represent an icy gaze, while also going along with the second line of a sweet melancholy feel. Tears of joy is in the highlights of her eyes, and also how big her eyes are. Shading and highlights are to add some realism and also some drama to my art piece. An almost epic feeling is represented with the dark side of the flowers and her head, neck, and shoulder. The other type of shading(the hatch marks) is to add some stylistic points to the drawing. Also, giving her a rough beaten texture, going along with her piercings and short spiky hair. Her intimidating exterior is inspired by this line, “My throat burns with the will to cry, But I am weak so I must force my strength.” Showing she has had some rough times in the past and has created a reputation for being strong and she must stay that way. The highlights on her face are to accentuate her features and make her pop out a bit. Also, making her seem like she’s standing in a positive light leaving the shadows behind her. The black background is based off of this line, “And I will walk in confidence down these dark streets.” Portraying that she is positive in the negative word. The highlights on the flowers are just for realism and to make them stand out more. All in all, she is standing tall in a New Beginning.

Documentary
Project Reflection Documentary Project Description-
This project is a combining of digital arts and science. We are doing a documentary project, using scientific subjects such as water conservation, fracking, solar power, and many other subjects. Then we are using movie editing programs, to incorporate the digital arts component. Also, we use lighting techniques and tech equipment(tripods, microphones, etc.) We had around 6 weeks to do this project, including interviews, and b role. We also had a requirement of 5-7 minutes, which is how long the documentaries were supposed to be. Some went over. We then had an exhibition at the Animas Theater, and we watched all videos in sections.
Why do Artists Produce Preliminary Plans? (sketches, brainstorms, storyboards, etc?)
Well each artist has a vision in their head and I believe they want that vision to be displayed in a way so that people can understand so, they have to plan each and every thing within the piece of art, now I'm only speaking to sketches and painting but this idea works for all kinds of art.
How are the characteristics and expressive features of art and design used to create art?
Going along with the first question I answered, expressive features and certain symbols, represent the artists thoughts and emotion as they were drawing the piece.
We use these symbols or certain strokes to make the viewer feel what we feel.
How and why is art used as a vehicle for communication?
I've already explained the how in the last two questions, why is so the viewer of the art, can understand and relate to the artist, relate to the cause. Such as my documentary, it showed people to take care of their pets and I made my dad cry because of it. It's so the viewer can actually do something and feel inspired by this artist.

Logo Project
Reflection-
I learned that I shouldn't be overly creative, Logos are simple and don't need much. I also learned that you can use negative space to emphasize your point. Like in mine I put women's faces and the devil's face emphasizing the name of my tattoo parlor, also my initials are S.M.R. I used that in my company name as you can see.
Mostly just simplicity, and color coding. Also the importance of emphasizing your colors and words, so people notice your logo.
I want to become a tattoo artist and I feel like i actually have a future in tattoos. Also, I'm a darker person so the name of my company shows my dark side. Overall, I hope I can use this logo in the future as I grow in my art and as I focus on tattooing.

Self Portrait
To what extent does a work of art depend on the artist’s point of view?
A piece of art is an artists heart and soul, no matter what medium. It matters greatly of course.
Artists have a unique way of looking at things, whether it be paint strokes, pencil lines, or computer codes. The reason an artist is creating this piece of art is to put their point of view out there. They want others to understand.
How are the characteristics and expressive features of art and design used to create a self-portrait?
Every technique we use as artists today were created by other artists, because the techniques in their time didn't fit their vision and meaning. It's an ongoing loop, we constantly create new techniques because the old ones don't fit our vision, personality, or feelings at the time. We used these expressive features and characteristics because art would be too free if we didn't have some kind of guideline I believe.

Teacher Creature
Project Reflection-
In this project I traced over a dragon and filled it in with the colors I wanted, then photophoped Brian's eye onto the dragon and used his hair color to color the dragon's hair. Then I added in a turtle, two sharks and two dolphins.
Trying to make the dragon look like Brian was pretty hard. I wanted to make this project more serious then a comedy. I didn't want to just plaster his face onto the dragon. It wasn't realistic to me,
so I just used his eye and hair color.
I'm a semi-realistic artist mostly, that and cartoon or an anime artist. I love fantasy and creatures, so I'm really good at drawing creatures and I'm getting better at drawing humans. I love to use colors, and a lot of dark colors in all honesty.
Well, for me, my dad was an artist and he uses a superhero comic book style, which he learned from just looking through comic books, so he passed that onto me. Then with social media, I was able to learn and mix other people's styles to create my own. I feel that it is just through socialization.

Photoshop Tutorials
I changed her hair color and skin color by making a layer and using the paint tool and painting over the hair and skin.
Then I changed the eye and lip color by using the pen tool and then making a selection and changed the color.
These were the two I needed most work on.
