Day of the Dead Project
Winnie Harlow was bullied as a child because of her skin condition. Vitiligo made her irritable and she began to bully other kids herself. She dropped out of high school. Finally, she accepted her skin condition and has changed the face of modeling. Obviously, Winnie is not dead but she represents the death of old model standards. She continues to advocate for what beauty really is.
Reflection:
Day of the Dead is a holiday that celebrates the dead on November 1 and 2. It is a happy festival that is chaotic and colorful. It is meant to reconnect to past loved ones, and basically have a party with them, and celebrate how they lived and who they were before they passed away. Now, people bake bread and use marigolds to honor the dead. Sugar skulls with decorative designs colored on them are added to altars. Candles are often used as well. All of them elements create beautiful altars with personal items of loved ones that have passed. All in all it is a beautiful day full of food, dance, singing, and color. They do this all to honor and reconnect with the ones that are typically forgotten.
I chose Winnie Harlow, who in fact is still living. She is a model and has stood advocating for women’s beauty. When I found out who she was I was very insecure about how I was looking at the time. I was looking for something to help me, something to make me feel safe in my body. As soon as I saw Winnie, I fell in love. Her skin condition made her strong and she took control of her life despite judgement. She inspired me, and she was so beautiful, and when I heard what she does for women I wanted to honor her in a creative fun way. Which came through in my day of the dead project.
Overall, I believe that I did a very good job, I'm happy with the result. My painting represents the death old model standards, and I wish I had more time to add more detail to the painting. All in all, I honored Winnie Harlow’s beauty. I honored her advocacy for women’s beauty. I'm proud of my work.
